The National Coalition
Against Domestic Violence (NCADV) was formed in 1978
when over 100 battered women's advocates from all
parts of the nation attended the U.S. Commission on
Civil Rights' hearing on battered women in
Washington, DC, hoping to address common problems and
programs usually faced in isolation. The NCADV is the
oldest national organization representing grassroots
organizations and individuals working to assist and
empower battered women and their children. In 1970,
there was no such thing as a shelter for battered
women. Today there are over 2,000 programs forming a
national movement based on the belief that women and
their children are entitled to a safe environment
free from violence and the threat of violence. NCADV
serves as a national information and referral center
for the general public, the media, battered women and
their children, agencies and organizations. If you
are abused or think your partner may be abusive,
contact your local battered women's shelter, domestic
violence program, or your state family violence
coalition.
